How to correct your Posture
Our lifestyle have changed. We are spending much more time in a seated position. Whether we are getting up in the morning, or driving the kids to school, seated at work, we’re getting back into the car at the end of the day, we’re sitting on the sofa. Depending on what we’re doing, we’re very much in that seated position most of the day.
What tends to happen is, the head starts to come forward. As we age our head starts going further and further down. That, in itself, starts putting a whole lot of pressure down your back and into the spine subsequently. It also effects what’s going on up in the neck and head as well, the upper fibers of the muscles at the top of your upper trapezius coming up into the back of your head, gets pulled, gets tight and you end up with things like tension headaches and migraines – these are known to be related to poor posture.
The next thing we have to look at is what happens to that kyphotic curvature of the upper part of the back. As we come forward, this all starts hunching. What’s going on here is that your pectoral’s part of your chest, become very tight. All of your rotator cuff muscles and between your shoulder blades, your rhomboids, are getting weak and over stretched.
We want to be doing any kind of exercise where we are pulling back. There are so many exercises we can do. Anything effectively that stretches through your pectorials, that gets your chest opening up and anything that encourages you to pull back is going to help combat that kyphotic hunchback type look that you don’t want.
I’m going to address the most common posture which is the anterior tilt of you pelvis. As we come down our spine, something generally happens around the area of the pelvis. The most common is where the pelvis tilts forward. Imagine your pelvis is like a bucket of water – Most people’s bucket is tilting so the water is taping out in the front.
What that does is that it puts a whole lot of pressure on that lumbar spine, so the bottom part of your spine. This comes from many different things. It could be from your daily posture, how your hip flexers may be tight, the front of your quadriceps, your rectus femoris may be tight. We might have weak hamstrings and or a weak back. I’m not here to guess. That’s what we do when we have you in the clinic, we fully asses what’s going on so we don’t guess.
Generally speaking, very, very, generally, we’ve got a tightness somewhere and we’ve got a weakness somewhere. That goes without saying. Really, we can also see that the weight of your body isn’t quite where it needs to be as well. What can we do to fix this? Lots. That is what we’re all about. We’re about getting you back to functional fitness and your posture is where you want to start with that. How can you go out and run that 10K or going to a Cross Fit class or come in and do a Pilates class. Whatever it is. It doesn’t matter what you’re doing. If you’re performing it and you’re not fully sure that you’re in the right position, that you’re training your body and you’re correcting any imbalances that you may have. We all have them and that’s okay, we just want to fix it. We don’t want to be making imbalances worse.
